The book is set over an extensive period and has many duplicate scenes from other work like Tides of Darkness, Beyond the Dark Portal, Reign of Chaos, The Frozen Throne etc.
The story starts off with Arthas at the age of 10, as early as the the period between the First and Second Wars, with Anduin Lothar and Varian Wrynn first arriving in Captial city bearing news of the fall of Stormwind. While Varian was trained to fight from young, Arthas was shielded from fighting by his father through they play together. However, Muradin Bronzebeard who come across Arthas, volunteered to train him. Later, he caught up in Daval Prestor's attempt to marry Calia Menethil.
A love triangle between Arthas, jaina Prodmore and Kael'thas Sunstrider is developed during the plot. Then Arthas starts taking responsibility of a prince and eventually, he is inducted as a Knight of the Silver Hand in the Cathedral of Light.
When the Third War begins, the story covers Arthas and Jain meeting Kel'Thuzad and Arthas calling Uther a traitor which result to dismissing him and the Knights of the the Silver Hands from service for their refusal to aid in the Culling of Stratholme. In times, Arthas' search for vengeance leads him to Frostmourne, the demise of Mal'Ganis and the moments leading to and after the murder of King Terenas.
